About

Photography isn’t just a hobby, it’s that thing that allows us to capture a fleeting moment in time. That image that takes us back time and time again to taste the feeling, the texture, the emotion of that special moment in time. It’s not a piece of equipment or a skill. It’s the cataloguing of our lives, of a changing world and our connection to it.

As a child my father used to take photo’s of almost everything, he also enjoyed nature. A trait he passed onto me and it remains one of my fondest memories of my father. Back then, there were only film cameras. I remember that we were regularly irritated that he took so long to manually set the camera up, get the focus correct and then he would often not get the shot! I think that is where my passion started. He was no professional photographer but simply showed a interest in camera equipment and capturing the special moments.

My first camera, a gift from my husband was a Minolta and that Minolta changed my life. Our honeymoon photos were captured on that old Minolta camera. As my interest grew in photography, I upgraded to new and better equipment. I got a Nikon F100 camera – I was so excited and felt the pressure to perform. Choosing the correct film to get the best photos were a challenge. When the photographic world changed – Digital – I was so scared of this “new” technology, I wasn’t sure how this was going to work. I used to take photos with my Nikon D70 and Nikon F100 to just be safe, cautious soul that I am! We started to go to more remote areas and this is really were the bug bit. I was addicted! I have had no professional training and to this day I feel as if I only know the basics of photography. I have realized with this “painting with light”, is an art that takes decades to perfect! I trust my “gut” and my wide experience of nature to get that special shot. I prefer photos that show some emotion, to me you need to see eye’s in a photo. I hope my shots elicit an emotional response in the viewer. The majesty of a mother elephant and her calf, as that picture calls to the empathetic parent in each of us. The loneliness of the wide open spaces. The beauty of God seen in his untouched creation. I trust my instinct when shooting, based on the emotion that comes from my own soul.

I enjoy photographing animals and nature. I am not much of a people photographer, preferring to sit hours at a waterhole to wait for the jackal to catch that dove. My favourite place in the world is the Kgalagadi. To me this place just has some magic in its bones and many of my photos, as well as much of my blog content, is born there, my own special place, the Kgalagadi. I do visit the Kruger Park from time to time. Etosha, Chobe, Hwange, Savuti & Caprivi are some of my other very special places to visit.
.
I do nature photography as a hobby. I run my own business full time, based in Johannesburg and we operate in the Retail Strategic market. I got married in 1994 and after 15 years of marriage we had our first child. Amongst our shocked friends and family, no-one was more surprised than us! We just both worked so hard and had a very busy social life. Our son was born in 2006 and then 2 years later we were blessed with a little girl. We stay on a farm just outside Johannesburg and at night I can see no lights. The only thing you can hear other than our dogs, is the owls or jackals. We sit on our deck having sundowners, watching the Kudu come to eat lucern. In the last few years we have installed some trap cameras to monitor movement and through this window we have seen brown hyena, caracal, mating honey badgers and genet on our farm. This deep connection to the animals and bush, is quite simply the love of my life. A deep, abiding love shared by my husband and children. When you visit our farm, we hope that this connection is what makes people feel at home in our sanctuary.
.
My hope is that you will feel my deep love and respect for animals and nature through my photographs and in reading some of my blogs you can experience a little what I see when I am out there, doing the thing I love most.
